Brandeis University is a private, nonsectarian research university in Waltham, Massachusetts, founded in 1948 on the former site of Middlesex University. It was named for Louis Brandeis, the first Jewish justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, after the trustees' initial idea of naming it for Albert Einstein did not go ahead; the Brandeis name was chosen in 1946. Fall 2025 enrollment was about 4,700, including roughly 3,300 undergraduates. The university is known for research, the Rose Art Museum, the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies, and a history of 1960s student activism. It combines a College of Arts and Sciences with graduate schools including the Heller School for Social Policy and Management and the International Business School. Brandeis is test-optional and first-year applicants use the Common Application with a school report and teacher recommendation.
