Blackburn College is a small private college in Carlinville, Illinois, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). It was established in 1837, named for Gideon Blackburn, and began as Blackburn Theological Seminary before being known as Blackburn University. Dr. William M. Hudson instituted the student work plan in 1913, patterned after Park College in Missouri. The student-managed Work Program is now one of ten federally recognized work colleges, and all resident students work 10 hours a week, though the required hours have varied between 10 and 20. Reported averages for incoming students are about a 3.23 high school GPA, an SAT near 1010 and an ACT near 20, and only a minority of applicants submit scores. One third-party source reports 892 of 1,113 applicants admitted, though sources conflict on test policy.
