Bishop Grosseteste University started in 1862 as a teacher training college for the Diocese of Lincoln and was renamed Bishop Grosseteste College in 1962 to mark its centenary. It won taught degree awarding powers in 2012 and was granted university status on 3 December 2012, following a government change that lowered the student threshold for the title from 4,000 to 1,000. Today it is a small university in Lincoln with around 2,300 full-time students, still known for teacher education alongside other undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
