BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus was established in 2000 as the first international offshore campus of an Indian higher education institution, initially operating from a rented building on Sheikh Zayed Road before moving to a dedicated campus in Dubai International Academic City as enrolment grew. It remains the only international campus of BITS Pilani, whose parent institute in Rajasthan, India was founded in 1964 by industrialist G.D. Birla, giving the Dubai campus direct lineage to one of India's more respected engineering and technical institutions. Unusually for a selective Indian-linked institution, admission to the Dubai campus does not require BITSAT or any other entrance exam, being based instead purely on Class 12 marks, a notably different approach from the highly competitive entrance-exam-based admissions used at the Pilani campus in India.
