Berea College is a private liberal arts college in Berea, Kentucky, founded in 1855 by abolitionist John Gregg Fee. It is a work college: every student holds an on-campus job of at least 10 hours a week, and it is known for its Tuition Promise, under which students pay no tuition. Berea was the first coeducational, racially integrated college in the South. It enrolls about 1,450 undergraduates, mostly from Appalachia, though students come from over 40 states and 70 countries. Admission is aimed at academically promising students with limited financial resources, so eligibility is tied to family size and adjusted gross income as determined mainly through the FAFSA. Admissions also emphasizes the strength of a candidate's courses and grades. Students still cover fees, housing and food, but over 75 percent receive enough aid to cover them.
