Benedictine University began in 1887 as St. Procopius College, started by Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey in Chicago's Pilsen neighbourhood to educate men of Czech and Slovak descent. It became coeducational in 1968, was renamed Illinois Benedictine College in 1971 and took the name Benedictine University in 1996. The first building on the Lisle campus was dedicated in September 1901. Later additions include Kindlon Hall of Learning and Birck Hall of Science in 2001, the Neff Alumni Center in 2012 and Goodwin Hall of Business in 2015, home to a Bloomberg Trading Lab. In 2012 the university partnered with the city of Mesa, Arizona, to open a campus there, and it also has class sites in China and Vietnam. Undergraduate admission has been test-optional since fall 2020, with a 2.5 cumulative high school GPA minimum.
