Bemidji State University is a public university in Bemidji, Minnesota, part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. It was founded in 1919 as Bemidji State Normal School, a teacher-preparation institution, with a first class of 38 students, and became Bemidji State University in 1975 after several renamings. According to Wikipedia it is the only Minnesota State school offering a BFA in professional and creative writing, and its Indigenous Sustainability Studies degree is described as the only such program in the United States. A 1998-99 proposal to rename it Minnesota State University-Bemidji was withdrawn after opposition from students, alumni and residents.
