Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida, was founded in 1989 by a group of parents who wanted their children with learning and attention differences to reach higher education. It is described as the first accredited baccalaureate liberal arts institution in the United States dedicated exclusively to students who learn differently, including those with learning disabilities, ADHD and autism spectrum conditions. The first program offered was a bachelor of arts in human services. Today the private nonprofit college sits on a 20-acre campus in Leesburg and enrolls roughly 515 undergraduates from 42 states and six other countries, according to its own figures. It reports a 90 percent freshman-to-sophomore retention rate. Admission centres on a recent psychoeducational evaluation that includes a cognitive assessment, plus an interview and three recommendation letters. SAT and ACT scores are optional, and the college places little weight on them.
