Bates College is a private liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine. It was founded in 1855 as the Maine State Seminary and renamed Bates College in 1863, and it was among the first coeducational colleges in New England. About 1,800 undergraduates study on a campus that includes the 600-acre Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area. Every senior completes a thesis or capstone project, and the college has a strong debate tradition through the Brooks Quimby Debate Council. Bates competes in NCAA Division III as a member of the NESCAC. It has been test-optional since 1984, one of the earliest colleges in the country to take that step. Applicants apply through the Common Application or Coalition Application, and the application fee is listed as $65 with waivers available. The college is regularly grouped with the Little Ivies and similar highly selective liberal arts colleges.
