Barry University was founded in 1940 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters as Barry College for Women, with support from Bishop Patrick Barry and Mother Mary Gerald Barry. The Catholic school later admitted men and gained university status in 1981. Its campus is in Miami Shores, where the Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is a central building. Today Barry is a coeducational private university offering undergraduate, graduate and professional study. Undergraduate applicants create a myBarry account or submit the Common App, and there is no application fee. Barry is test optional for most majors: students with a high school GPA above 2.3 may be considered without SAT or ACT scores, though scores are still needed for applicants who do not meet that threshold, for GED holders under 21 and for early admission. Applicants with scores above the school's average, SAT 1011 or ACT 20, are encouraged to send them for honors and scholarship consideration.
