Bangor University opened on 18 October 1884 as the University College of North Wales, funded by quarrymen and farmers who wanted higher education for the people of North Wales. It began in an old coaching inn, the Penrhyn Arms, with 58 students and ten members of staff. Its students were first conferred degrees by the University of London until 1893, when Bangor became one of the three original constituent colleges of the University of Wales. In 1903 the city donated a 10-acre site at Penrallt overlooking Bangor, and the Main Arts Building opened there in 1911.
