Ball State University is a public research university in Muncie, Indiana. Its roots go to a normal school that closed in 1917; the Ball brothers, local industrialists, bought it out of foreclosure and donated it to the state, and in 1918 it opened as the Indiana State Normal School, Eastern Division. It became Ball State Teachers College in 1929 and Ball State University in 1965. Enrollment was about 20,400 in fall 2023. Ball State is known for teacher education, architecture, journalism, telecommunications and entrepreneurship. Its undergraduate catalog says every freshman applicant is individually reviewed on curriculum strength, grades in core subjects and overall high school GPA, and Indiana applicants are expected to complete the Core 40 academic component or the Enrollment Seal. The university has been test-optional since 2019.
