Bahauddin Zakariya University began in 1975 as the University of Multan, created by an Act of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, and opened in rented buildings with eight departments. In 1979 it was renamed after Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya, the thirteenth-century Sufi scholar who founded a centre of theological learning in Multan. The main campus is on Bosan Road in Multan. Wikipedia describes it as the second largest university in Punjab after the University of the Punjab, and it now has around sixty departments and constituent colleges such as Gilani Law College and Multan College of Arts, plus sub-campuses including Vehari and Dera Ghazi Khan. As a public university it draws largely on Multan and the southern Punjab districts.
