Aurora University began in 1893 as a seminary in Mendota, Illinois, moved in 1912 to a new campus in Aurora and was renamed Aurora College. A postwar evening degree programme drew many veterans, and in the 1970s and 1980s it added professional fields and graduate degrees before becoming Aurora University in 1985. It affiliated with George Williams College in 1992 and merged with it in 2000, and the George Williams School of Social Work continues that legacy. Its catalog describes a private, independent, comprehensive institution with roughly 6,000 students. The university serves students in Aurora, online and at the University Center at McHenry County College in Woodstock. Undergraduate applicants may be reviewed test-optional, in which case admission and any scholarship rest on the academic record, and the nursing programme sets a 2.75 minimum GPA.
