Augustana College was founded in 1860 in Chicago by Scandinavian Lutheran immigrants, moved to Paxton, Illinois, in 1863 after a railroad land offer, and settled in Rock Island in 1875. Its first year drew twenty-one students, ten Swedish, ten Norwegian and one American. The sciences entered the curriculum in the 1880s and the college separated from its theological seminary in 1948. It remains a Lutheran-affiliated liberal arts college on about 115 hilly, wooded acres beside the Mississippi River, and has marked 150 years in Rock Island. Wikipedia lists 2,570 students for fall 2024, nearly all undergraduates. The college has been test-optional for many years and does not penalize applicants who leave scores out. It sits in the Quad Cities area on the Illinois side of the river, and applicants must supply a high school GPA to be considered.
