Atlanta Metropolitan State College is a public state college in southwest Atlanta, part of the University System of Georgia. The system approved a junior college for the Atlanta area in June 1965, and it opened in September 1974 as Atlanta Junior College with 504 students, becoming the system's thirty-first institution. It was renamed Atlanta Metropolitan College in 1988 and took its present name in 2012, the year it began offering four-year degrees. Enrollment peaked at 3,129 in 2013. For decades it was the only predominantly Black two-year institution in Georgia. The college has a partnership with Georgia Tech, backed by a $250,000 grant, to ease transfer into STEM programs. Admission is broadly open, with a 2.0 GPA in the Required High School Curriculum and optional test scores.
