Arts University Bournemouth began as the Bournemouth Government School of Art, established in 1880 to meet local demand for art instruction, and numbers soon rose to 180. It became a Science and Art school in 1884, moved to 1 Regent's Terrace on Old Christchurch Road in 1885 and stayed there until 1890. After several name changes the Arts University College at Bournemouth became Arts University Bournemouth on 13 December 2012, with Privy Council approval.
