Amherst College Amherst, Massachusetts

Amherst College is a private, undergraduate-only liberal arts college in Amherst, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1821, partly as an effort to relocate Williams College, and is among the oldest institutions of higher education in the state. The college was men-only until it became coeducational in 1975. It is best known for its open curriculum, which has no core or distribution requirements and lets students design interdisciplinary majors. Amherst belongs to the Five College Consortium, so students can take classes at four nearby schools, and it sits on a roughly 1,000-acre campus that includes the Emily Dickinson Museum. Admission is highly selective: Wikipedia reports a 7.7% admit rate for the class entering in fall 2025. The college describes its policy as need-blind and says it meets the full demonstrated need of admitted students. Testing is listed as optional/flexible for first-year applicants.
