The American University of Sharjah (AUS) was founded in 1997 by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, with the aim of building a comprehensive, American-style university that would serve both the UAE and the wider Gulf region. Modelled on the liberal-arts tradition of American higher education while operating within the Gulf, AUS was among the earlier private universities in the UAE to combine broad general education with professional degree programmes under one roof. It now offers 33 undergraduate majors and 48 minors, alongside 21 master's programmes and eight PhD programmes, delivered through four academic units: the College of Architecture, Art and Design, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the School of Business Administration.
