Al Ain University (AAU) was established in 2004 and enrolled its first students in 2005, becoming one of a wave of private universities founded in the UAE in the early 2000s as the country expanded access to higher education beyond its handful of older public institutions. It grew beyond its home city with a second campus in Abu Dhabi opened in 2008, which was later rebuilt and relocated to a purpose-built site in Mohamed Bin Zayed City in 2017, giving the university a genuine two-city presence rather than a single satellite office. Licensed by the UAE Ministry of Education, AAU offers around 17 undergraduate programmes across six colleges, Engineering, Pharmacy, Law, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Business and Communication and Media, alongside eight master's programmes and a professional diploma in teaching aimed at practising and aspiring educators.
