Ajman University was established on 17 June 1988 by an Emiri decree of Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi III, Ruler of Ajman, becoming the first private institution of higher education in the Gulf Cooperation Council region. It began life as the Ajman University College of Science and Technology, with an early focus on providing accessible higher education, including to expatriate students of both genders, a notably progressive feature for the UAE at that time. Over more than three decades the university has grown into a comprehensive institution offering around 46 accredited programmes, 26 undergraduate, 18 graduate and 2 doctoral, all recognised by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Its roughly nine specialised colleges span dentistry, pharmacy and health sciences, medicine, engineering and information technology, business, law, humanities and sciences, architecture, and mass communication, giving it one of the broader academic footprints among UAE private universities.
