Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is a public state college in Tifton, in south Georgia, named for the Georgia signer of the U.S. Constitution who founded the University of Georgia. A 1906 law set up an agricultural and mechanical school in each congressional district, and the Second District school opened in Tifton on February 20, 1908 with 27 students in Tift Hall. It became South Georgia A&M College in 1924, Georgia State College for Men in 1929, and took its present name in 1933 when the Board of Regents was formed. It gained state college status in 2006 and now offers bachelor's as well as associate degrees. U.S. News ranked it 16th among regional colleges in the South in 2026. Undergraduate enrollment exceeds 3,000, and the college has been adding four-year athletics.
