Abertay's education history begins in 1888 with the formation of the Dundee Institute of Technology, which followed a bequest in 1872 from Sir David Baxter for a mechanics' institute in Dundee. By 1902 the Scottish Education Department had recognised it as one of the first central institutions, something like an industrial university. It gained university status in 1994 as Abertay. It set up the world's first degree in computer games and still runs unusual courses such as ethical hacking. There were 4,990 students in 2022/23, including 3,815 undergraduates and 1,175 postgraduates.
