Trinity Washington University began as Trinity College in 1897, founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as, by its own account, the first Catholic liberal arts college for women in the nation. Congress chartered it that August, and the first students arrived in 1900. The women's college peaked near 1,000 students in 1968, then dropped to about 300 by 1989 as men's colleges went coeducational. Under president Patricia McGuire, who took office in 1989, it began recruiting local underserved students and expanded its professional and graduate programmes, and it became Trinity Washington University in 2004. The undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences is still women-only, while other schools serve a wider mix of students. The Tigers compete in the USCAA after earlier years in NCAA Division III. The university reports more than 2,000 students across five schools, and a directory lists a 99 percent acceptance rate. It is located on Michigan Avenue NE in Washington, D.C.
