Westminster School is an independent day and boarding school in central London for pupils aged 13 to 18. It stands on its original site beside Westminster Abbey. Westminster Under School, its prep school for ages 4 to 13, is on Vincent Square. The school's origins lie with the Benedictine monks of the Abbey. Elizabeth I confirmed royal patronage in her 1560 charter, and the school celebrates her as its Founder. That charter provided for 40 Queen's Scholars. The Public Schools Act of 1868 made the school an independent body. Girls have been full members of the Sixth Form since the 1970s, and both schools are now moving to full co-education. Every year group is due to include girls and boys by 2030. About a quarter of pupils board.
