UC Law San Francisco was founded in 1878 by Serranus Clinton Hastings, California's first chief justice, who gave $100,000 to start it, and was known for generations as UC Hastings College of the Law. The board voted in November 2021 to remove his name over his role in killings of Native Californians in the 1850s, and the new name took effect on January 1, 2023 after legislation signed in September 2022. Hastings's descendants sued in October 2022 to block the change. It is an independent law school closely affiliated with the University of California. The April 2024 fact sheet counts 1,169 students: 1,092 in the J.D. programme, 27 LL.M., 22 M.S.L. and 28 in health policy and law. The Class of 2029 profile lists 460 first-year students from 5,224 applications, with a median LSAT of probably 162, though the page does not label its columns.
