George Heriot's School is an independent, co-educational, all-through day school on Lauriston Place in Edinburgh, Scotland. It teaches children from Nursery to S6. George Heriot, a royal goldsmith, founded the school in 1628 to educate Edinburgh's fatherless children. It opened as George Heriot's Hospital in 1659 and began admitting girls in 1979. George Heriot's Trust, a Scottish charity, governs the school. The Heriot's Foundation still supports children who have lost a parent, and these pupils are known as Foundationers. Senior pupils take National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications. Most children join in P1, P6, P7 or S1, and the school also considers applications for other year groups. Admission is selective and depends on an entrance assessment.
