Royal Grammar School Newcastle (RGS) is an independent, co-educational day school for pupils aged 7 to 18. It stands on Eskdale Terrace in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Tradition holds that Thomas Horsley, Mayor of Newcastle, founded the school in 1525, and it received its Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I. RGS has a Junior School, a Senior School and a Sixth Form, with over 1,300 pupils. Girls first joined the Sixth Form in 2001, and the school became fully co-educational across all year groups by 2008. In 2026, RGS merged with Westfield School to form the RGS Newcastle Group of Schools. RGS keeps its name, its campus and its selective admissions. Westfield stays on its Gosforth campus as a non-selective division of the group. Means-tested bursaries are available.
