Head-Royce School is an independent, coeducational college preparatory day school in Oakland, California, serving students from kindergarten through grade 12. It traces its origins to 1887, when Anna Head founded the Anna Head School for Girls in Berkeley. After the University of California acquired its Berkeley property, the school moved to the Oakland hills, completing its new campus by 1964. In 1971 it opened The Royce School for boys, named for philosopher Josiah Royce, and the two schools fully merged as Head-Royce School in 1979. The school enrolls more than 900 students in its Lower (K-5), Middle (6-8) and Upper (9-12) Schools. Upper School students complete a senior project and a community service requirement.
