How to Customize a Human Hair Wig for a Natural Look

Customize a Human Hair Wig for a Natural Look

Wig size matters!

One of the most essential tips for getting the most natural look from your human hair wig is to get one that is the correct size. Many people order their real human hair wigs online and never even try one on or get measured for their new wig.

Not all small, medium, and large sizes are uniform when it comes to wigs. Instead of going by vague sizes, it is important to measure your head and use those measurements to purchase a wig that is the right size.

To measure your head for a real human hair wig, you need to know how many inches your head is around. Measure at ear height and all the way around to learn your head circumference. This is the number you need when sizing a wig.

HD lace real human hair wigs are difficult to tell from natural hair!

Lace front and full lace wigs create the appearance of hair growth on your head! When you are dealing with real human hair wigs, only the fact that they are not growing makes them different from your own natural hair.

You can tell a high-quality lace-front human hair wig by the hairline appearing uneven and thin in spots. This is how a real human hairline grows. When you have a cheaper, less well-designed lace wig, you will have an almost bushy hairline. This is more obviously a wig.

Pay attention to matching your skin tone to your real human hair wig.

Skin tone matching comes down to warm tone or cool-toned skin. The true skin tone of a wig can be hard to determine from pictures. The type of lighting, lens filter, and more can all change the true skin tone of a wig.

One of the tricks wig photographers use to make the wig look amazing is to use mannequin heads or models with the same skin tone as the wig they are modeling. This will make the look of the real human hair wig different when someone else tries it on.

You can get a feel for a wig's true skin tone by carefully reading the wig details. Most wig manufacturers and dealers list the skin tone on their websites or in their catalogs.

A natural head of hair is not all the same color, ever!

Sometimes, it can be hard to remember that while we will call people redhead or auburn, etc, the truth is that everyone has subtle color changes throughout their hair. When you look closely at someone's hair, notice how some of the hair is lighter or darker than others.

You want a wig with the same effect! This is known as dimensional coloring or highlighting.

Hair roots are a different color than the rest of the hair.

When you buy an HD lace real human hair wig, look at the roots. A higher-quality wig will have them a tad different color than the rest of the hair. This is how natural hair looks as it grows.

Having the roots of the hair a different color increases the realism of the wig.

Style those baby hairs!

Real human hair wigs come with baby hairs. Baby hairs are sometimes included on better-quality synthetic wigs but with less success. Baby hairs on a wig tend to be straight and even, but baby hairs growing on a head are not.

To style them, use a toothbrush and add a touch of hairspray. Then, use this baby hair brush to make those baby hairs look real. Have them go a little wispy and wild. You can also try a small curling iron, but I have had more success with the hairspray on the toothbrush method.

Natural hairlines are not even and straight lines.

With a new real human hair lace wig, you almost always have to cut the lace. I hear people say they can't cut it straight and want someone else to do it. In reality, you almost want a miniature zigzag cut.

Take your time, and instead of trying for a perfectly straight line, try for an uneven cut—nothing extreme, but enough to hint at the zigzag pattern. It looks odd when you are not wearing the lace human hair wig, but once you put the wig on, it looks very real.

Make use of your natural hair when possible.

If you are fortunate enough to have some natural hair growing, you can use a lace wig to mix it with the wig's hair. By blending your natural hair and the wig's human hair, you will make it very hard to tell it is not all your natural hair.

Conceal those bleached hair knots along the human hair wig’s part or hairline!

The knots along the hairline and part are usually bleached when a wig is manufactured. This can either help hide the knots or make them more noticeable. Bleach will damage the real human hair from which the wig is made, so its use is limited.

When you look at the hairline and where the part is on the wig, can you see the knots? If so, you can use a little makeup to hide them. Use concealer on the knots, being careful only to get it on the knots.

Every time you shampoo or the wig gets wet, it needs a fresh application of concealer. Once you do it a few times, it should only take a few moments. The powder will make it easier to keep the concealer in place.

Double up on the mirrors!

Since we do not have eyes in the backs of our heads, we can use two mirrors to check the backs of our wigs. Once you have your wig on, stand in front of a mirror. Then, use a hand-held mirror and hold it behind you while you look in the front mirror.

This will allow you to see how the wig looks even in the back. Check the sides and all angles while you are at it. If you have access to a second stand mirror instead of a hand mirror, this can also work for styling.

People never believe me, but the most effective way to increase your wig's realism is to boost your confidence while wearing it. When you are insecure about your wig, you tend to touch it and mess with it a lot.

This will draw attention to it and can be a dead giveaway. By using multiple mirrors to view all sides, you can leave the house knowing your wig looks great.

See it in person before you buy when possible.

If you are lucky enough to have a local showroom where you can view HD lace human hair wigs in person, take advantage of it! Private Label has its flagship Atlanta hair store and other locations popping up. Their website is good, but nothing beats seeing a wig in person!
