Arshad Nadeem has made history for Pakistan ever since he stepped onto the International athletic platform. His exceptional qualities made him throw the highest Javelin and make the World Record, moreover, he won the 2024 Olympics by breaking the World record by throwing the highest throw which is 92.97 meters

Nadeem broke the World record previously registered by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, his highest throw was recorded at 90.97. the 27 year-old-athlete from Mian Channu, in Pakistan’s Punjab province, broke an Olympic record with the world-highest throw that is 92.97m during his second attempt in the men’s javelin throw.

He is indeed Pakistani’s first individual Olympic gold medal winner and the nation’s first medallist at the Summer Games. Arshad Nadeem, who has an imposing frame and stands 6 foot 3 inches tall, won the javelin throw title at Paris 2024 with the Olympic record. This distinction also stands as an Asian record.

He dominated in the javelin throw final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and he threw the highest javelin all-time making history by getting a distinction and representing Asia.

The 90 Meter Effort in Paris, however, wasn’t Nadeem’s first achievement. At Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, he launched a throw of 90.18 meters to secure a gold medal, again in a stacked field. This distance is also marked as a new CWG record.

A year later, Arshad Nadeem one-on-one against Neeraj Chopra in the Final of the 2023 Worlds athletic Championship in Budapest, and won the silver medal, his recorded throw was 88.17 meters, while Nadeem was a little back with 87.82 meters. Regardless of the difference, it was a historical medal, it was the epic moment when Pakistan stood as the first World Athletic Champion.

Background

Arshad was born in Khanewal City, Punjab, on January 2, 1997. He is the third oldest child of his parents among 8 siblings. As a child, he played cricket at the state level and pursued his education at Punjab College Mian Channu.

Nadeem started practicing javelin throwing in 2015 after trying a shot put, and discus throw. He became fond of javelin throw and practiced a lot to be skilled. Despite the success, it is worth noting that his sports career journey in the sport was tough. He is a champion, who has achieved success without having access to proper training facilities or modern ground. Nevertheless, he believes that quitting cricket is the best decision he ever made.

In 2016, he was awarded a scholarship by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), which made him able to train for eight months at the IAAF High-Performance Training Centre in Mauritius. Since then, he has grown leaps and bounds.

Arshad Nadeem made his Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020, becoming the first Pakistani athlete to reach the track and field final. He placed fifth with a throw of 89.62 meters.

He was granted funding from the Olympic Solidarity scholarship program, as he received no support from Pakistan. Nadeem chose to prepare for Paris in South Africa, on the back of it. He made his comeback at the 2022 World Championship, where he secured fifth with a competitive 86.16m

Personal life

Arshad Nadeem is married and has two children a Son and a Daughter. He is a devout Muslim. Nadeem said he is an introvert. His coach, Salman Iqbal Butt, who once competed at the national level in discus throwing, remembered him as a respectful and obedient athlete who bowed his head and always listened carefully to his advice.

Awards and Recognition

In 2022, he received a Pride of Performance Award by the President of Pakistan. Many other public figures and the Pakistani Government honoured him with many prizes.
